Federal Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grants are awarded by the Federal Government to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a degree. They do not have to be repaid. Pell Grants provide many students with the foundation upon which they build their sources of education aid.

Eligibility for a Pell Grant is determined by the U.S. Department of Education, using a particular formula that determines the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This number is reported on a student's SAR (Student Aid Report), also called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA should be every students first step in applying for any type of student aid.

The amount of money awarded to a student under the Federal Pell Grant Program depend on certain variables. These include:

  • EFC

  • Tuition costs

  • Full time or Part time status

  • Full or Part Academic year of study

Important Details about Pell Grants

In the 1999-2000 school year, the average Pell Grant awarded was $3,125. Those applying should understand that only one Pell will be granted per student per year and that a student can only receive a Pell Grant for one academic institution at a time.

When a Pell Grant is awarded, the student will receive a notice in writing informing them about the amount of the Grant, how the Grant will be paid and when the Grant will be paid. Institutions most often credit a student's account with the Grant, pay the student directly by check or use a combination of both. Institutions are required to pay the student at least once per term or at least twice per academic year.

Those students who are enrolled in an institution part time or less than part time are eligible for Pell Grants; however, the award will not be as high as for those students who attend full time.
